Happy New Year – if you are Thai.
Songkran is celebrated in the Burmese and Thai Temples in Burma Lane, Penang. It’s on right now, so if you are in Penang you can go. I generally go quite early – around 8.30 or 9AM, when it is only crowded – so it is still quite easy to get through people. Later in the day it is so jammed you can hardly move.
Many people make it their mission to drench everyone in sight with water, so dress accordingly and have anything you don’t want wet in a plastic bag. They are just having fun, and aren’t malicious, so if you ask them not to wet you they won’t, but you’ll get wet anyway. People are happy and friendly. I didn’t see any other caucasians this morning – I see them in the afternoons if I go again then. You can park in nearby streets, or the bus from George Town stops right at the front. on Kelawei Road.
There’s also free food and water, and you can buy beer and soft drinks. And there are stage shows, music and dancing. It’s a lot of fun.
